Peter H. Smith
"Democracy and Democratization in Latin America"
This
seminar will explore patterns and processes of democratization
in contemporary Latin America. Specific topics will include:
cycles of democracy during the twentieth century, electoral institutions
and behavior, economic and social performance of democratic (and
non-democratic) governments, the pursuit of social equity,
popular opinion about the merits of democracy, and future scenarios
for Latin American politics.
Peter
H. Smith is Professor of Political Science and Simón
Bolívar Professor of Latin American Studies at the University
of California, San Diego. He is a specialist on comparative politics,
Latin American politics, and U.S.-Latin American relations. His
publications include fifteen books and approximately one hundred
book chapters or journal articles. Currently he is a visiting
scholar at the Center for Latin American Studies, UC Berkeley.
