Mexico: What Lies Ahead?

Reading list

As the enthusiasm of the July 2000 presidential election has withered away, there are growing concerns about Mexico’s future. This course will review key variables of the last three years of Mexico’s history and incorporate the results of the 2003 midterm election. Some of the topics to be analyzed are:
• President Vicente Fox’s first three years;
• Mexico’s new foreign policy, with an emphasis on relations with the U.S.;
• Human rights and the debate about the past;
• The July 2003 results and the political trends that will influence the 2006 presidential election.

Sergio Aguayo is Professor of History at the Center for International Studies at the Colegio de México. He is a founding member of the Academia Mexicana de Derechos Humanos and writes a weekly column for the Mexico City daily Reforma.
