Urban Planning: Innovations From Brazil
Prof. Jorge Wilheim
This
seminar will cover several themes in the history of urban planning
in Brazil. The course will begin
with the historical
context of the transitional period through which we are living.
Methodologies for urban planning will be analyzed, and São
Paulo will be studied in depth. Topics to be covered include:
São Paulo’s historical development and current challenges,
zoning, participation and environmental issues and several planning
innovations. The course will end by moving from specific, local
planning issues to those faced in urban centers around the world
and by debating the challenges of planning in the 21st century.
Jorge
Wilheim was formerly the Deputy Secretary-General of Habitat
II. A well-known Brazilian architect and town planner,
he has
been, at different times, the country’s Secretary of State
for Planning and for the Environment and São Paulo’s
President of the Planning Department.
Currently, he is serving as the Rio Branco Chair in Brazilian
Studies at the Center for Latin American Studies.
