In
1988, Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas ran
for the Mexican presidency as the candidate
of the Frente Democrático Nacional,
a loose coaltition of leftist parties. He narrowly
lost to Carlos Salinas de Gortari of the PRI
in an election that was widely believed to
be fraudulent.That experience led him to found
the Partido de la Revolución Democrática
(PRD) in 1989 with other center-left and leftist
politicians.
This
spring, Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas will
be teaching a one-month special seminar at
the Center for Latin American Studies, "1988:
The Mexican Transition to Democracy."
