LATIN AMERICA EVENTS ON CAMPUS

Eric Van Young
"The Anti-Modern Moment: Localism and Insurgency in Mexico, 1810-1821"

Can the popular sectors in the Mexican insurgency of 1810-21 be considered as acting out of “modern” political motives or ideologies or in "modern" political forms? What does modernity might mean in this context? What role did ethnicity, popular ideology, forms of localism within the insurgent moment and the Constitution of Cadiz (1812) play? Eric Van Young will be addressing these questions in this talk co-sponsored by the Latin American History Working Group.

Eric Van Young is a professor of History at UC San Diego. The author of nine books, he is currently writing a history of Mexican psychiatry and a biography of Lucas Alamán.

There will be a dinner with Prof. Van Young following the workshop. Please email Sarah Hines at sarahthines@berkeley.edu if you would like to attend the dinner or to be placed on the working group’s email list.
