Distinguished visiting professor at the Center for Latin American Studies, First Lady of Brazil, President of the Consultative Council for Community Solidarity Program, and Professor Emeritus at University of São Paulo taught a graduate seminar in Spring 2000 titled "Youth in Brazil: Social Situation, Culture and Public Policies."

the Spring 2000 Rio Branco Chair, President of the Brazilian Political Science Association and professor of political science at the University of São Paulo will be teaching a graduate seminar Spring 2000 titled "Democratization and Economic Restructuring in Brazil."

LEITURAS BRASILEIRAS
Professors Maria Angelica Madeira and Mariza Veloso of the Universidade de Brasília return to CLAS again this year to teach a course titled
"Leituras Brasileiras: Pensamento Social e Literatura no Brasil."
Lectures were held in Portuguese at the Center.

CHALLENGES FOR BRAZIL: A DIALOGUE
Following up on the tremendous success of last year's "Alternatives for the Americas" conference, CLAS is hosted another major conference to promote a dialogue between prominent political and intellectual figures from Brazil and the U.S. Participants in the conference included David E. Bonior, Democratic Whip, Second Ranking Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives and Ruth Cardoso, First Lady of Brazil, among others.
