Scholars, 2001-02 |

Through
its Visiting Scholar Program, CLAS provides a temporary
home to Latin Americanists from domestic and international
institutions. CLAS offers three types of affiliations:
Research Associate for visiting faculty, Post-doctoral
Fellow for scholars who have received their Ph.D.s within
the last two years, and Pre-doctoral Fellow for scholars
who are conducting research for their dissertations. Below
is a brief background on a few of this year's visiting
scholars.

María
Gregori is a professor of anthropology at the Institute
of Philosophy & Human Sciences, University of Campinas,
Brazil. Her past research has focused on violence against
women, street children, citizenship, and social policy.
She will use UC Berkeley resources to work on her current
research project - articulating subjects as new forms
of erotism and gender violence. Professor Gregori will
be at CLAS through February 2002. |

Enrique
de la Garza holds a Ph.D. in sociology from El Colegio
de México and currently teaches at the Universidad Autónoma
Metropolitana Iztapalapa. A labor specialist, his recent
publications have explored the Mexican workers' movement,
restructuring labor markets, and globalization. |

Susana
Nudelsman teaches economics at the Universidad
de Buenos Aires. Her recent research projects have
explored saving, investment, and growth in Argentina.
She has also served as an economic analyst for the
Argentine Ministry of the Economy. |

Marcela
Hernández, a sociologist of work from the Universidad
Autónoma de Aguascalientes, Mexico, joins CLAS for
the academic year 2001-2002. She is the author of numerous
papers on Mexican industrialization and labor relations. |

Janet
Chernela, Anthropologist is a professor in the
department of sociology and anthropology at Florida
International University. Her recent work includes
studies of Yanomami land recuperation in areas devastated
by gold mining. She currently chairs the American Anthropological
Association's Committee for Human Rights. |
