2007 Tinker Summer Research Updates

The following are updates filed by 2007 CLAS Summer Research Grant Recipients.

Maria G. Cantu, a PhD candidate in Hispanic Languages and Literature, is in Guanajuato, Mexico, conducting research on Don Quixote and Latin American Literature.  She reports that research is going very well.  Her work has benefited especially from the generous support of the Director of Guanajuato’s Centro Cervantino and the Museo Iconográfico, Alfonso Alcócer.

Maria reports that Guanajuato is very similar to Berkeley--it is liberal
and it is a college town, so there is plenty to do. The place is possessed
of a rich cultural life and is brimming with music. There are many
wonderful painters and potters; visitors should be sure to bring home some
handicrafts or artwork.(But be advised: credit-cards are useless—here it’s
all cash, all the time!)

Maria counsels future students: bring your umbrellas and don't be
afraid to speak your mind.  Keeping focused on your work is important, but
meeting local people is a critical part of your cultural experience.

To talk to Maria more about her travels and research you may reach
her at mariagcantu (at) berkeley (dot) edu.
