2007 Tinker Summer Research Updates

A market in Iquitos, Peru.

Heidi Lehto is a second year student in the Latin American Studies Master of Arts program.  She has been in Iquitos, Peru researching the cultures of medicine in an Amazonian slum neighborhood.

Heidi warns us to avoid “Quistococha, the zoo, because the animals are kept in disgustingly small cages without proper treatment” and instead consider “taking a trip into the jungle, especially Pacaya Samiria National Park.”  Her recommendations for food are similar; although most “people may worry that they’ll get sick, the hole in the wall places usually have the best local food.”  Her favorite place is “Huasaí- a restaurant off the Plaza de Armas that provides consistently delicious menu- the daily lunch specials.”

Above all, during her travels, the most fascinating person Heidi has met to be “an older midwife who has delivered thousands of babies in the slum area over the last 30 years.”

To talk to Heidi more about her research and travels in Iquitos, you may research her at hlehto (at) berkeley (.) edu.
