Susan
Reese is a second year student in the Public Health
master program.
She
is currently been in Managua, Nicaragua researching
the transmission and
treatment of the Dengue and Influenza viruses in
Nicaragua.
Susan
brightly reassures that despite the energy crisis
(plus the attendant
blackouts), warnings of “thieves” and
danger, Managua “is really
not as bad as everyone says it is, the people are
great, and there is
plenty to do if you like dancing.” Plus, “no
one has even tried to rob
me yet.” For added excitement,
Susan recommends drinking “any beverage
in a plastic bag, its just more of a challenge
that way. But make sure
you aren’t holding anything
sharp (like a pen) in you hand while you are
trying to drink it.”
When
she’s not dancing, Susan is researching
in a lab that “that so high tech,
the technology here is better than the programs
I have worked on in the
US.” One of her colleagues, Jonathon, “is
currently trying to get together
funds for research on HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 in Nicaragua
because there
is currently very little known about prevalence
of these viruses in Nicaragua
and also no screening of blood donations for these
viruses.”
