2007 Tinker Summer Research Updates

Igor Rodriguez tries to make friends with a horse in Colombia.

Igor Rodriguez is second-year graduate student in the Latin American Studies program. He’s currently in Bogotá, Colombia studying the history of national imaginaries related to Colombian indigeneity. More specifically, Igor is researching how the Colombian state and dominant cultural groups managed and constructed their nation’s “Indian-ness” in such a way as to produce national pride and identity concepts. In addition, he’s working on a citizen-interactive urban-visioning project and exhibit organized by the British Council, the Externado University and the Museum of Bogotá called “The City of the Future."

Igor recommends that all researchers travel with a letter of introduction and lots of background knowledge, carry themselves like professionals, make appointments to discuss their projects with institutional functionaries and to develop a good rapport with them, and finally not to waste time on the “field.”  He suggests photocopying or photographing materials to bring back and study at home.

To talk to Igor more about his travels and research you may reach him at igor_rodriguez (at) berkeley (.) edu.
