Affiliated Researcher, 2011-12

Maria Beatriz Salles has dedicated her professional life to working for the Brazilian government, first for the judiciary and then for the executive branch. As general counsel at the Ministry of Culture, she worked on the development and reform of the Brazilian law on cultural rights. Her involvement in this work led her to further investigate the subject at the Universidade de São Paulo, where she is studying the Brazilian government’s role in the dissemination of culture and the democratization of access to cultural assets. While at CLAS, Salles is researching the content, function and impact of cultural policies to propose how the Brazilian government can best support artistic excellence, creativity and innovation in order to combat poverty and benefit individuals and communities.
