Marta Rodriguez de Assis Machado

Marta Rodriguez de Assis Machado is a full-time professor of Law at the Fundação Getulio Vargas in São Paulo and a researcher at the Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento (CEBRAP). Her current research focuses on criminal theory and punishment; the increase in criminalization and penalization; and the relationship between the Brazilian black and gender movements and the law. She is the author of Risk Society and Criminal Law: An Evaluation of New Politics on Criminal Law(2005; in Portuguese) and the co-editor of Theory of Responsibility in the Democratic State (2009; in Portuguese). While at CLAS, she is studying domestic violence and possible responses to this social problem that do not involve imprisonment.
