Professor Bergmann’s current research projects include gender and sexuality in early modern Spain and colonial Spanish America, and optics in Hispanic baroque poetry. Recent articles on: madness and poetry in Cervantes; the visual and the aural in the poetry of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz; representations of the nurturing body in early modern Spain; and cross-dressing, gender transgression and violence in early modern Spanish theater.

Research interests: 
Early modern Spain, Spanish literature, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, visual studies, gender and sexuality studies, 20th Century Spanish women writers.
