Digital gender violence is a phenomenon that is increasingly prevalent in social media and presents a challenge to governments to take firm action against it. Defamation campaigns, fake news, and the circulation of deep-fake videos containing sexual content or impersonations have damaged politicians’ reputations and disqualified them from politics. The phenomenon is on the raise globally. However, in regions such as Latin America, with its fragile democracies, digital violence is becoming one of the main challenges to political gender equality and democracy because it excludes and silences alternative political voices and thwarts human rights. This project examines the following two research questions: How is digital violence against politicians manifested in social media and what challenges does digital violence in the political arena pose to internet governance?
