Women, Violence, and the Nation in Brazilian Literature and Film

Abstract:

This research looked at representations of violence against women in Brazilian literature and film, taking into consideration socio-cultural aspects present in two fictional works: the novel A Emparedada da Rua Nova, by Carneiro Vilela, and the film Aquarius, by Kléber Mendonça Filho. As a starting point for more in-depth research on the topic to be done during my doctoral studies, this project included visits to the archive and to libraries, as well as meetings with scholars and authors. I was able to get a better sense of how the topics are being studied by Brazilian scholars, what kind of resources are available there, and what directions I can take with my own research. The information gathered in Brazil will be used to write an essay that may possibly become a chapter or a portion of my dissertation.
