Course Description:
Sometimes we need to agree on a trick or three, on acts of make-believe, to shake our fear and write what you want. Other times we ought to shush and really listen, wait for what is actually there. This writing workshop orbits around paying attention to what we each need in order to take creative risks. We will start by saying YES—wholeheartedly—to a daily writing practice and see where that takes us (supported by visual art, conversation, readings, prompts). En route, we will learn about the unexpected daily practices of contemporary artists and play with surprising organizing principles to bring about inventiveness and wonder when there seemingly is none.
This 3 hour-a-week course will be taught in English and student work can be submitted in Spanish or English. Undergrads are welcome.
Daniela Rossell:
Daniela Rossell was born and raised in Mexico City. She is an interdisciplinary artist and teacher who loves to teach. She works solo and collaboratively in the fields of visual art and writing. Her first book, Ricas y famosas, was described by historian Cuauhtémoc Medina as “among the most significant political works of the art of her country,” and by the New York Times as a “photographic journey through Mexico's twilight zone.” Rossell’s work has been written about in numerous books such as Witness to Her Art, and shown around the world in places such as Greene Naftali, MoMA PS1, J. Paul Getty Museum, Tate Modern, Hammer Museum, SF MoMA and Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes to name a few.
