2020: Javier Couso, "Chile at the Crossroads: Social upheaval, prospects for the future, and implications for Latin America"

CLAS Special Seminar, March 2020
Chile at the Crossroads:
Social upheaval, prospects for the future, and implications for Latin America

After months of social unrest beginning with the rise of Santiago’s metro fares last October, Chile is on the path to creating a new constitution that will replace the current holdover from the Pinochet era. This two-part lecture series, led by renowned Chilean constitutionalist Javier Couso, will look at the current crisis, the constraints of the 1980 constitution, the process of writing a new one, and what that document might mean.

Javier Couso (Ph.D., Law and Jurisprudence, UC Berkeley) is Professor and Director of Constitutional Law at the Universidad Diego Portales in Santiago. He also holds the Prince Claus Chair at Utrecht University.

This is a non-credit seminar. In special circumstances, 1 credit may be available for a directed study.
