CLAS: A National Resource Center

Seals of U.S. Department of Education, UC Berkeley, and the CLAS logo, for CLAS as a National Resource Center.

The UC Berkeley Center for Latin American Studies is designated a National Resource Center (NRC) supported by the U.S. Department of Education under the auspices of Title VI, Section 602(a) of the Higher Education Act of 1965. NRCs work to strengthen access and training in major and less commonly taught languages, and to enhance Latin America area studies training in all disciplines. As part of the Title VI award, CLAS receives Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) funding for graduate students studying Latin American languages.

National Resource Centers establish, strengthen, and operate language and area studies centers and programs that will serve national needs by providing resources for:

• Research and training in international studies

Teaching of modern foreign languages

Advancing the study of Indigenous area languages

Instruction in fields needed to provide full understanding of areas, regions, or countries in which those languages are commonly used

• Language aspects of professional and other fields of study

• Instruction and research on issues in world affairs that concern one or more area countries

• Outreach and consultative services on a national, regional, and local basis

• Linkages with overseas institutions of higher education and other organizations that contribute to the teaching and research of the Center

• Specialized library collections

Being designated a National Resource Center marks an organization as one of the nation's premier institutions for teaching and training resources in a particular world area. In addition to CLAS as a Latin America NRC, Berkeley is also home to six other NRCs, covering East Asia, Southeast Asia, Middle Eastern, South Asia, Africa, Europe, and Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies.
