Mônica Carvalho Gimenes is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Berkeley. Drawing on decolonial and transnational feminisms, her dissertation studies feminicidal violence and feminist resistance in Brazil and the Southern Cone. Her research looks at how contemporary feminist theories, practices, literature, and arts are co-constructing a counter-discourse on feminicidal violence that questions national justice systems, challenges simplistic victim-perpetrator paradigms, recognizes intersecting oppressions, and disrupts authoritarian hierarchies. Monica holds an M.A. in Spanish and a B.A. in Multimedia Studies: Journalism from Florida Atlantic University.
