BRAZIL: The Struggle for Black Education in Salvador

Abstract:

Recounting how the struggle for Black educational access in Brazil helped organize a community, C. Darius Gordon describes the formation of the Movimento Negro Unificado (MNU, Unified Black Movement), and that group's work to bring both better access and better representation to their country's Black population through the 1980s. That struggle continues, as many governmental promises remain unmet, if not rescinded.
