Indigenous education in Mexico: Policies, curricular programmes and textbooks designed to attend diversity 2011-2019

Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to understand how policies, curricular programmes, and textbooks have addressed the needs of indigenous students in Mexico. Since textbooks are mandatory, free, and government-endorsed, they reflect political ideologies related to nation-building and attention to diversity. They are also an important support tool for teacher practice and planning of lessons throughout the academic year. During summer 2019, I conducted archival research where I surveyed different documents that gave me an overview of the different conceptual models towards indigenous education and allowed me to better understand how they link with the different policy instruments. The main outcome of this project will be a background paper that will inform in the future my doctoral thesis. To prepare for this research, I have gained experience in understanding the structure of Mexico’s educational system as well as the challenges the country faces regarding pluricultural education.
