Revista Pihhy ("seed" in the Mehi Jarka language) seeks to highlight, record, and circulate Indigenous knowledge authored by thinkers from some of the 305 Indigenous peoples and at least 274 Indigenous languages existing in Brazil. CLACS is partnering with its publishers at the Núcleo Takinahakỹ de Formação Superior Indígena at the Universidade Federal de Goiás in Brazil and the Secretaría de Formação, Livro e Leitura at the Ministério da Cultura in Brasilia to translate one monthly piece for an English-speaking audience. The project was conceived by artist, educator and leader Naine Terena, is edited by Alexandre Herbetta and Gilson Ipaxi Awiga Tapirapé, and coordinated at Berkeley by Natalia Brizuela. The Coletivo de Tradutores Berkeley-Brasil translating into English includes Derek Allen, Luiza Bastos Lages, Mônica Carvalho Gimenes, Gabriel Lesser, Ana Claudia Lopes, Isaac McQuinn, and Liam G. Seeley.
Revista Pihhy, named for the word for “seed” in Mehi Jarka, the language spoken by the Mehi-Krahô people, is linked to the “Connection Culture and Thought Program” of the Department of Education, Reading and Literacy/SEFLI/MinC. The journal seeks to stimulate the creation, production and circulation of Indigenous authored materials based on plural and ancestral knowledge, just as is done in a pur, a traditional Mehi vegetable plot, where seeds guarantee living well.
Revista Pihhy seeks to collaborate with the Brazilian education system, fostering processes of teaching and learning related to Statute 11.645 and to the Statute of Guidelines and Bases of Education (LDB). It also seeks to collaborate with the production of scientific knowledge, awakening fundamental knowledge grounded in different epistemological frameworks, and with the strengthening of Brazilian democracy, sowing the seeds of new relationships and social dynamics that guarantee a fairer, more plural, and more balanced country.
The project will make materials available in Portuguese, bilingual or plurilingual, and in English, in monthly editions of a digital magazine hosted by the Ministry of Culture (MinC). The materials can be expressed through written, audio or audiovisual formats, valuing orality and pointing out the multiple possibilities present in different languages of expression, which are strongly present in Native territories.
Revista Pihhy will deal with themes such as education, rights, knowledge, politics, science, and arts, among others, through some elements: I've Already Transformed Myself in Image; Masters of Culture; Educational Notebooks; Indigenous Literature; The Word of the Woman is Sacred; Vibrations, Sounds, Bodies, and Indigenous Rights, which make up the magazine's editorial proposal.
This is an innovative and vanguard project because it promotes the research, recording, and systematizing of this ancestral knowledge that was in violent historical and colonial processes, erased, made dormant, or invisibilized in the country. It brings up plural and diverse thoughts about fundamental themes to the contemporary world, such as sustainability, the relationship with nature, democracy, and good living.
It makes use of, yet, to the interested readers, vast knowledge about Indigenous worlds and about different ways of being in the world, making it evident the complexity and the value of epistemological plurality existent in Brazil, and putting itself, in this way, along with the historical anti-colonial fight of Indigenous peoples, for a more sustainable, respectful, and worthy world.
A Revista Pihhy, semente em mehi jarka, língua falada pelo povo Mehi-Krahô, é vinculada ao “Programa Conexão Cultura e Pensamento”, da Secretaria de Formação, Livro e Leitura/SEFLI/MinC. Ela busca estimular a criação, a produção e a circulação de materiais de autoria indígena, baseados em conhecimentos plurais e ancestrais, assim como se faz em um pur, em uma roça tradicional mehi, onde sementes garantem o bem viver.
A Revista Pihhy busca colaborar com o sistema de educação brasileiro, alimentando processos de ensino e aprendizagem relacionados à Lei 11.645 e à Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação (LDB). Busca, também, colaborar com a produção de conhecimento científico, despertando saberes fundamentais, pautados em distintas matrizes epistemológicas, e com o fortalecimento da democracia brasileira, semeando novas relações e dinâmicas sociais que garantem um país mais justo, plural e equilibrado.
O projeto disponibilizará materiais em português, bilíngues ou plurilíngues, e em inglês, em edições mensais, de uma revista digital hospedada no Ministério da Cultura (MinC). Os materiais podem ser expressos por meio da escrita, em áudio ou audiovisual, valorizando a oralidade, e apontando as múltiplas possibilidades presentes em distintas linguagens de expressão, fortemente presentes em territórios originários.
A Revista Pihhy tratará de temas como educação, direitos, conhecimentos, política, ciência, artes dentre outros, por meio de alguns elementos: Já me transformei em Imagem; Mestres de Cultura;Cadernos Educativos; Literatura Indígena; A Palavra da Mulher é Sagrada; Vibrações, Sons, Corpos e Direitos Indígenas, os quaiscompõem a proposta editoral da revista.
Trata-sede um projeto inovador e de vanguarda porque promove a pesquisa, o registro e a sistematização desses saberes ancestrais que foram, no violento processo histórico e colonial, apagados, adormecidos ou invisibilizados no país. Ela traz à tona pensamentos plurais e diversos sobre temas fundamentais para o mundo contemporâneo, como a sustentabilidade, a relação com a natureza, a democracia e o bem viver.
Oportuniza, ainda, aos leitores e às leitoras interessados/as vastos conhecimentos sobre os mundos indígenas e sobre modos diferentes de estar no mundo, deixando evidente a complexidade e o valor da pluralidade epistemológica existente no Brasil, e se colocando, desta forma, junto da histórica luta contracolonial dos povos originários, por um mundo mais sustentável, respeitoso e digno.
