Urban Nawatl: The Language of the Aztec Capital

Una Canger

February 6, 2014

Event Description

Like all languages, Nawatl is not homogeneous. Canger argues that the variety of Nawatl spoken in the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, was the result of the convergence of a number of dialects spoken by people who had flocked to the city from the provinces.

Una Canger is a professor emeritus of Native American Languages and Cultures at Copenhagen University and the recipient of Mexico’s Order of the Aztec Eagle for her cultural contributions.
